Our worldwide testing centers make a decisive contribution to the advancement of Kiekert as the leader in automobile closure system technology. Our labs are among the most modern and comprehensive labs in the automobile supplier industry and have unique proprietary inventions such as the specially developed and manufactured testing equipment. Only when our products meet the exceedingly strict Kiekert safety and quality specifications are they released for production.

Even our prototypes are subject to durability tests that simulate implementation in vehicles throughout the most varied regions of the world

Our special test procedures and methods make it possible for us to ensure the safety and comfort of all of our products while reducing development time and costs.


  • Flawless function of the latch in all temperature ranges from Siberian winter at -40° C up to desert heat of +85° C
  • 6-week endurance test during which the vehicle is exposed to temperature cycles for a 12-year vehicle lifetime
  • Extreme conditions for acceleration of material degradation in the form of thermo-shock: from +85° C degree to -40° C degrees within 15 seconds
  • Humidity >90% as critical factor for electrical components

For 100% assurance of the functions of the latch under water, frost and corrosion conditions, we do comprehensive tests on:

  • Impermeability of the electrical components
  • Colored water test to track the water flow
  • Water irrigation according to international standards with a pressure of up to 0.4 bar
  • Rotary arm irrigation according to international standards with a pressure of up to 0.4 bar
  • Immersion test
  • Car wash test with sudsy water to endure the chemical durability
  • Vehicle irrigation and single-door irrigation

A specially developed procedure rebuilds the actual behavior in the door in terms of volume flow, dust concentration and pressure differential:

  • 30-minute dust filling that corresponds with a dusty route of 2,000 km
  • Use of various types of dust with various effects
    • Arizona dust, fine (reddish) acc. to SAE J/726 Rev. June '93 Table 4
    • Arizona dust A4, coarse (white) acc. to ISO 12103-1: 1997
    • China dust (reddish) acc. to JIS Z8901 Cl. 8

  • Maintenance of the opening forces

  • Elimination of noise (clicking/creaking)

Our latches are tested according to specific customer requirements in a salt fog test. This is how we test long-lasting salt and corrosion effects on a vehicle in our testing center.

  • Salt fog test in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9227 over 96 – 720 hours at 35°C
  • Assurance of Surface Durability
  • Dynamic corrosion test (part of an endurance test)
  • Test of the electrical components (leakage current)
  • Maintenance of the activation forces
  • Assurance of flawless appearance of the visible parts

Reliability during an entire vehicle lifetime – that is our main goal. We attain this with extreme test conditions:

  • Temperatures of -40° C to +85° C, humidity > 90 % and dust contamination
  • Up to 150,000 cycles over the lifetime of around 12 years in 6 weeks
  • 1 cycle: Unlocking, opening from outside, closing, automatic locking, mechanical unlocking, opening from inside, closing from outside, locking from outside
  • Shutting speed of 1.2 m/sec. to 3 m/sec.
    Note: Door shutting at 3 m/sec. leads to breakage of the side window!

During an accident, acceleration spikes of up to 200 g occur. Kiekert validates the crash safety of its latches with static acceleration in all spatial directions. The crash safety criteria:

  • Durability against external acceleration effects
  • Crash-related deformation of the auto body with extreme warping in the closure system (18 times the normal door counter pressure is withstood)
  • Assurance of the opening function
  • Highest safety standards, which are confirmed worldwide by SYNCAP and NCAP tests

Kiekert engineers are working hard to make the special Kiekert quality audible right with the pleasant sound of the door opening and closing. Our testing centers have psycho-acoustic measuring equipment, mobile acoustic chambers, high-speed cameras and a unique creak and rattle test bench for measuring relative movement in the vehicle.
